Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach has a wide variety of different
activities for you and your family to enjoy. Although it is known
for its golf, there are several activities in which to partake at
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myrtle Beach has oceanfront golf courses,
outdoor shopping, several restaurants, museums, and other outdoor
activities for your enjoyment. Whether you are interested in a vacation
alone, or with your family and friends, Myrtle Beach has several options
for you.
The history of Myrtle
Beach helps to explain how why it is the way it is today. History
records that the first tourists here were a party of Spaniards from
Hispaniola, who landed about fifty miles north of present day Myrtle
Beach in 1526 and eventually established the first European settlement
in the U.S. This settlement was about thirty miles to the south. That
settlement, San Miguel de Cauldape, however, was abandoned the following
year, and the group proceeded to return to Hispaniola.
In the next three centuries, the region's population grew progressively.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to think of Myrtle
Beach as a vacation
resort, although it was rather rustic at the time. Houses and
camps were sparse, and there were just a few permanent residents at
the turn of the century. However, drawn by the ocean, sand
and trees, people began to filter into Myrtle Beach permanently.
Around the late 1900s, several people lived in Myrtle Beach and it
became more than just a camp for adults. However, the resort area
was still known as an adult camp because it was able to keep its vivacity
due to its comfortable weather conditions and day and night time activities.
One other interesting fact about the vacation city is that Myrtle
Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and did not actually become
a city until 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that
grows abundantly in the area. There are twenty five thousand permanent
residents in the city. There are also millions of visitors in this
full-service resort community. Guests come to enjoy the wide beaches,
the Atlantic Ocean, and an incredible range of activities, entertainment,
golf, shopping
and dining. Today, Myrtle Beach is still a well-known destination
for vacationers from around the country.
